I never met David Ivan Briggs, E-4, but I remember hearing the news of his death. He was from my hometown, North Collins, NY: a town small enough that, if someone died, the whole town sort of 'felt' the loss. This was especially true for David: he didn't 'just die'; he was killed in a war (you KNOW what you can do with your 'Police Action' Mr. Politician...), plus, he died so young, so close to the holidays, and so far from home. David made the war 'real' to me. Even so, not having been in a war, the number of lives lost in the country's service is too huge to be anything but abstract to me, even though I know they ALL count. I guess David is my 'Unknown Soldier' - my connection, my way to remove the 'abstraction' and honor each and every one of them and their loved ones. Thank you for making it more real for me - and I don't mean that in a ghoulish way - but by reminding me that they all were PEOPLE, not statistics. Finally: you told it without any editorializing whatsoever, even though you'd certainly have every right to do so. Instead, you told it straight and true. Your story was far more illuminating than that of any journalist, and far more moving and eloquent than any speech could ever be.
With utmost respect, honor and thanks, Bruce Williams
